Yesterday the long awaited news to split off Philip Morris International broke out, just under six months from splitting off Kraft.  They won't exactly be ridding PM International just yet - no, they've actually just come out to affirm that it will go, but the decision of when won't be firmed until January 2008, but when they do, their headquarter will be out of Switzerland.  Its good really, like other investors and myself included, we saw this coming, and to be entirely hone...

Rethinking MO

Though I have not entirely lost faith with their cash flow and high dividend payout, I've been watcing their prices drop for a while now. MO still has many tobacco liability suits and some have very large punitive damage awards that were upheld by appellate courts. The the $50 million judgment paid out in the Boeken case after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear it scares me to think what it implies for future similar cases. Internationally, negative litigation is expected in Canada, and th...

Since Altria Group spun-off Kraft it seems like their shares have not been getting any momentum. This wasn't helped much either after CEO Camilleri stated in late April that the decision to spin off Phillip Morris International was a "decision for the next 50 years,'' not ``the next 50 days or the next five years,''.  Conversely, he did hint that the company will "consider" separating the international and U.S. tobacco units over the next several months.News also came that MO's market tes...

Altria Group threw out Kraft back at end of March, and as I suggested in one of my earlier journals, Altria is also likely to announce a split of its domestic and international tobacco units most likely sometime this year. My thoughts were right after several top tobacco analysts suggested it last week during an industry meeting held by the Tobacco Merchants Association. You see, Altria Group did well with one restructuring, so why not give it another shot. Under their control is US-based Phil...

Altria Isn't Done Just Yet, I'm Not Either

I've been hospitalized for the past few weeks, and had a minor surgery.  I suppose that at my age, it's something that was bound to happen.  But I'm out and I'm as well as ever.  I just hope this cold weather would get going soon.  During my little "vacation" Altria has been going through pretty interesting moves, and since the split-off of Kraft, it's already gone back up over 10%.  Here's what I would suggest, do not worry too much about the red "loss" you have on yo...

About

smokinstocks

Hello everyone, my is Anthony Sacks, but please feel free to call me Tony. I am retired, and probably the most senior here in terms of age, but equally as young at heart. I am 64 years of age, soon to be moving on to 65. Been married to my beautiful wife Carla for 35 years, father of six, and grandfather of five, the latest to a handsome baby boy, Charles Anthony Sacks. I live in Dover, Delaware, and enjoy spending most of my time with my grandchildren. I have a passion for fishing, and at my age, eating. PS2 has become an interesting experiment for me. I play with Isaac and James, my two other grandchildren. I do not smoke and am not an investment expert. But I do enjoy investing and following market news. Particularly fond of Altria Group and Reynolds American. Bullpoo has been a fun discovery for me over the internet, and I hope to meet other individuals as keen on investing as myself. Please feel free to message me any comments.
